Beneath the 12-Mile Reef is a
1953 adventure film about a family of
Greek-American sponge divers and their rival with a family of
W.A.S.P divers. The film was made in
Tarpon Springs, Florida, a town famous for it's Greek community. It starred
Robert Wagner,
Terry Moore and
Gilbert Roland.
Directed by
Robert D. Webb, the film is noted for its beautiful underwater color
cinematography as well as it's epic
film score by composer
Bernard Herrmann (known for his work on such
Alfred Hitchcock films as
Vertigo).
Plot
Greek-American father and son sponge diving entrepreneurs, Mike and Tony Petrakis, find themselves in plenty of scrapes over fishing territory with the Rhys' - a rival family of English descended hook-boat fishermen who are prepared to resort to violence and even murder to maintain their established fishing grounds. Run-ins between the Petrakis and Rhys family lead to the exchange of threats, resulting in all-out brawls, and a most surprising outcome - love. When Tony Petrakis meets Gwyneth Rhys, he falls head over heels. In this adaptation of Shakespeare's
Romeo and Juliet, will the love of two feuding families bring them together or will it tear them asunder?

- The film has fallen into public domain, and there are numerous bootleg DVD releases on the market. In most cases the quality is poor.
Both Wagner and Moore were considered rising stars when the film was made.
Edward Cronjager was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography Color.
The film features the Greek Orthodox Faith prominently.
This was Twentieth Century-Fox's third CinemaScope production.
